B1: Upskilling Principals and BOTs on the

Summary
This programme is facilitated by experienced BOT members from 10 regions
throughout the country. There has been a high uptake from smaller regions
where training has not been delivered previously and it is intended to
run workshops in these regions wherever possible.

B2: Good Practice in Teaching International
Students

Summary
The programme is integrated with the Ministry of Education's ESOL programme
for international students, and facilitated by the College of Education
ESOL International advisers. There are two strands.
The primary school programme is for one day, and focuses on effective
provisions for international students. The secondary school programme
is for 3 days and focuses on: effective provisions for international students,
effective assessment for placement and tracking progress, and introduction
to the ILIP programme (English language intensive programme).
The levy funding is being used to support teachers of international students
from private and integrated schools, as well as teachers from schools
in rural areas/or areas outside the main centres or teachers from schools
that may have difficulty in accessing professional development programmes.

B3: Supporting International Student Managers
& Support Staff with their pastoral care responsibilities

Summary
This is a national programme delivered by skilled local facilitators in
11 regions. Workshops have been well attended and received by participants.
Key issues for participants were: the definitions of "guardian"
and "designated caregiver"; where legal responsibilities lie;
and time management.
The key strands of the programme are: school support management, quality
management systems, the school programme/services, pastoral care skills.
All participants receive a helpful resource pack to provide an overview
of each strand and references to additional material.

C3: Role of the Pastoral Care Professional
(Experienced Practitioners)

Summary
The initial workshop programme will consist of three two-day workshops
held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Each workshop would cater
for 30 participants.
An interesting feature of the C2 and C3 initiatives is the establishment
of a bulletin board on the Education New Zealand website. The aim of the
bulletin board is to respond to questions posed by programme participants
through an email help service.

E1: Improving Management of EFL Institutions

Summary
The people targeted for this initiative are middle managers responsible
for TESOL/TEFL provision in PTEs, in language schools within (or owned
by) tertiary institutions, and in secondary schools. The main focus of
the initiative has been the development of substantial training resources
for facilitators and participants.

Improvement Project (Contestable Funding Pool for Local ESOL Support Initiatives)

Summary
This Auckland-based project involves working with 10 PTEs in a provider-based
developmental project which includes a common workshop for trainers from
each participating PTE and on-site support visits from skilled facilitators.
E2.2: Teacher Development in Context: Working
with EAL Learners (Contestable Funding Pool for Local ESOL Support Initiatives)

Summary
Two clusters have been established for this provider-based initiative
- an Eastern Cluster centred around Hawkes Bay, and a Northern Cluster.
Clusters include a range of PTEs and Polytechnics. The process involves
initial seminars/workshops based on the needs identified by the participating
providers, online consultancy for lead teachers, and a second seminar/workshop
at which participants share experiences and progress, lead teachers present
workshops to address identified needs and appropriate locally-managed
future developments are planned.
