New Chief Executive for Education New Zealand
Grant McPherson has been selected as permanent Chief Executive of Education New Zealand. He will take up the role in January.
“Grant McPherson brings a mix of senior private sector and public sector experience to what is an extremely challenging position. He will be required to lead his team to develop and implement a series of strategies to deliver on the Government’s ambitious expectations of Education New Zealand,” says Charles Finny, Board Chair.
Grant’s offshore experience, including as NZTE’s Regional Director for South and South East Asia, and his time as Deputy CE of NZTE, are particularly relevant to his new role.

Grant McPherson
Lester Wolfreys will remain in the role of Interim Chief Executive until Grant McPherson starts.

Market Statistics Update
Education New Zealand maintains statistical summaries on international students from 30 countries around the world. These statistics include the number of students from each country who studied in New Zealand last year, the number of first-time visas granted to students each year, and the sector breakdown of current students from each country.
These summaries are updated quarterly. The latest versions are now available on the Education New Zealand website HERE.

Are Your Students Staying in NZ After Term Ends?
Some international students who are finishing their schooling in New Zealand may have their student visas extended beyond the last school term.
New Zealand schools are no longer responsible for international students after the term finishes, even if their student visa has been extended.
It is up to students’ parents and host parents to take responsibility for students until they return to their home country.
The Ministry of Education has advised schools that they should have a policy in place in the case where a student has an extended student visa. Schools should ensure that parents and students are aware of this policy. Agents are advised to ensure their clients ask what their particular school’s policy is. |

Changes to Visa Rules for Group Students
Minister Joyce recently approved an amendment to the Group Student definition in the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (the Code).
The change effectively means that Group Students no longer need to apply for a group visa from Immigration New Zealand to be treated as Group Students under the Code. They can enter NZ on individual visitor visas. This will make things easier, especially for students coming from visa waiver countries who do not need to apply for a visa in advance of their travels to New Zealand.

Up to 300 Brazilian Secondary Students to get Scholarships to NZ
Pernambuco State’s “Win the World” (Ganhe o Mundo) Scholarships Programme will send 1000 Brazilian secondary school students on overseas study experiences in the coming year. New Zealand has been selected to receive 300 of these students. A Joint Statement was presented in a meeting between Pernambuco State’s Secretary for Education Mr Anderson Gomez and New Zealand Education Counsellor Bruno Aldaz.

At the meeting in Pernambuco
Pernambuco aims to provide public school students between 14-17 years old with English language and schooling experience in an English speaking country. Pernambuco will pay for all related costs, including tuition fees, air fares, health insurance and a monthly living allowance.
Students will be placed in New Zealand secondary schools through a local education agency. The contract for this service will be awarded through a public tender process. We will let you know when there is a process in place to express your interest in hosting some of the students.
If you have any questions about the programme in the mean time, please contact Ana Azevedo, ENZ Marketing Manager in Brazil at ana.azevedo@educationnz.govt.nz or Bruno Aldaz, ENZ Education Counsellor for South America at Bruno.aldaz@educationnz.govt.nz. |

PACE 2012 Update
Registrations are coming in fast!
Some of our events are now full and have been closed while others remain open. To avoid disappointment please register as soon as possible.
New Zealand Education Fairs, Indonesia, 25 February 2012
The first PACE event planned for 2012 is the New Zealand Education Fair being held in Indonesia. After a long absence from the market we are returning to the capital, Jakarta, and look forward to a successful event.
Marketing in Indonesia is particularly relevant for the tertiary sector, with a small proportion studying in secondary and junior education. All universities, ITPs, and Private Training Establishments are encouraged to participate. This event will be held just before the first set of Malaysian fairs to enable institutions to combine marketing activities in these two countries into one trip.
In July this year New Zealand Specialist Agent Training was held in Jakarta. Forty-eight Indonesian education agents attended and 23 have been awarded accreditation. Their details can be found on our website HERE

New Zealand Education Fairs, Malaysia, 26 Feb – 4 Mar 2012
These successful, longstanding fairs have been running for more than ten years. In 2012, two sets of New Zealand Education Fairs are being planned for February/March and August. The February/March events will be held in Petaling Jaya, Penang and Kuching.
Marketing in Malaysia is particularly relevant for the tertiary sector, although recently there has been increased interest in secondary education as well. All universities, ITPs, Private Training Establishments and some secondary schools are encouraged to participate.
Over 1,800 visitors attended the New Zealand Education Fairs held in 2011 across four Malaysian locations.
For MOE and INZ statistics on Malaysian students in New Zealand please click HERE. A strong group of New Zealand Specialists Agents (NZSA) is present in Malaysia and their details can be found HERE.

China Mission
The China Mission is now closed to registrations. If you would like to be put on the wait list for any events within the mission please contact Rahael
South America Mission, 17 – 31 March 2012
Education New Zealand is organising a Mission to South America early next year. The Mission has been set up to leverage off the Expo Belta fairs on 17 – 18 March in São Paulo. New Zealand is to be the featured country at Expo Belta for 2012. Participation in the Mission will support institutions who want to break into the market or strengthen existing relationships.
This is an ideal opportunity to promote your school to our top-performing education agents in South America. The Mission is made up of an international fair where coordinated New Zealand branding ensures that New Zealand stands out from our competitors, three New Zealand Education Fairs and three Agent Seminars in São Paulo and Rio de Janero, Brazil, Bogotá, Colombia and Santiago, Chile. A shorter trip is an option for those who wish to visit fewer cities.
An ENZ staff member will be on hand during the Mission and participating institutions will receive marketing advice in advance to support their preparation as well as further market briefings and assistance along the way.
The Mission is ideal for those wanting to expand their contacts in South America. There’s no better way to establish new agent relationships than with face to face meetings.
All events have met the minimum number requirements to go ahead, so please register for the events that you are interested in participating in.
Registrations close: Wednesday 21 December 2011

New Zealand Education Fair in Korea a Big Success
The third annual New Zealand Education Fair was held on 5 and 6 November 2011 at the Orchid Room, Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Seoul.
Although the Korean market has been in decline in recent years, it remains New Zealand’s second largest source of international students. In 2010, over 15,000 Koreans were studying in New Zealand.
There was strong representation at this year’s fair from all education sectors with 31 New Zealand institutions participating. The institutions included four universities, six ITPs, 17 schools, three English language schools and one private tertiary provider.

New Zealand Education Fair - Seoul
New Zealand’s appeal as an educational destination remained strong with 1,154 people visiting the fair over two days (623 on Saturday and 531 on Sunday).
Education New Zealand received almost 1,400 online registrations in the weeks leading up to the fair, an increase of around twenty per cent over the 2010 fair registrations. The pre-registration process proved very beneficial, with some visitors arriving ready to enrol in a specific institution at the fair.
To maximize New Zealand’s penetration into the market, Education New Zealand held a New Zealand Education Agent seminar in collaboration with English New Zealand to complement the fair.
Air New Zealand, Zespri, SK Telink, and five education agents sponsored the fair. |
