Welcome to the latest edition of E-News. Another school holiday has come and gone, so it's time to catch up on the latest industry news.
International PhD Scholars Selected
The 2009 NZIDRS recipients were chosen at a selection meeting in Wellington on October 1.
With the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships limited to ten recipients this year from a previous offering of 38 per year, the competition was extremely tough. Education New Zealand received a total of 328 applications, so the selection panel had a very difficult job.
Three of the offers went to Canadian students, three to German students, two to UK students, and one offer each went to students from the US and Malaysia.
The students and their subject areas and intended NZ universities are as follows:
Carol M. FROST – University of Canterbury (Entomology)
Cosmin LASLAU – University of Auckland (Chemistry)
Owen VALLIS – Victoria University of Wellington (Music)
Susanne C. KREJCEK – Victoria University of Wellington (Biological Sciences)
Sebastian REICHAU – University of Canterbury (Chemistry)
Jessica TERRUHN – University of Auckland (Sociology)
Andrew FILMER – Victoria University of Wellington (Music)
Emma HORSFIELD – University of Auckland (Pharmacy)
Thomas R. ETHERINGTON – University of Auckland (Geography)
Gregory P DE PASCALE – University of Canterbury (Physical Geography and Geology)
The students have until November 13 to confirm their acceptance of the scholarship, however three of the recipients have already confirmed. A reserve list of six additional candidates has been assembled in case any of the offers are declined.
The deadline for applications is July 15 each year.
Air New Zealand Update
In the 1st September edition of E-news we advised that an update regarding the Air New Zealand support of international education would be included in this edition of E-news. This partnership has developed further with Air New Zealand and Education New Zealand proposing a series of inbound agent and media familiarisation visits from key markets during 2010, making use of Air New Zealand flights up to the value of approximately $140,000.
The objectives of the visits would be to stimulate agents' promotion of New Zealand education and to gain profile raising opportunities through international media exposure. Regional Groups and individual institutions would have the opportunity to host inbound groups, and the travellers' costs would be considerably subsidised by Air New Zealand and Education New Zealand.
The remaining $60,000 worth of Air New Zealand flights will be available to industry via a contestable process administered by Education New Zealand.
Details of the proposed inbound groups and the contestable fund including registration and application processes will be advised as part of an upcoming edition of E-news.

Expect relevant and inspiring papers addressing language teaching practice, and a strand of papers focusing on applications of sociocultural theory to Second Language Acquisition.
Conference Theme - context and communication: mediating language learning
What languages are in use in our communities?
When and where have they been learned?
How have they been learned?
What are they used for?
These questions suggest some of the ways in which context and communication mediate language learning. We invite you to explore these and other questions relevant to language teaching and learning at the 2010 CLESOL conference in Dunedin.
For further details about the conference, please visit the website http://www.clesol.org.nz/2010/home.html or contact Hayley on 04 562 8259.
UNITEC’s “Leadership Development for experienced International Education Administrators” programme"
Recently a celebration was held at UNITEC to celebrate the completion of the inaugural Leadership programme for International administrators. Graduates shared an afternoon tea, were presented their completion certificates and were able to mix and mingle with their old e-classmates.
In 2010 each of the four courses that make up this programme will be offered on-line, and the dates have been carefully selected to not coincide with intake and exit times, and to allow holiday times to be used to complete assignments. It is possible to complete this National Certificate in Business Administration in the one year, or if you are only interested in one or two of the courses they are stand alone. Courses are offered online and there is an on-campus day at the beginning of each in Auckland (if there is enough demand courses may be offered elsewhere).
The courses are: Pastoral Care, 18th January until 16 April, Services 17 May-6 August, Change and Challenges, 9 August-29 October and Marketing 1 November-21 January 2011.
The new course coordinator for UNITEC is Suzette Eastmond from Vagamundo International Education. You can contact her on suzette@vagamundo.co.nz for more details.
To apply please complete a UNITEC Short Course enrolment form, available on-line at www.education.unitec.ac.nz (short courses) and send it to the course administrator Lecta Chanthawong lchanthawong@unitec.ac.nz . Cut-off date to enrol is the 11th of December.
